One in a weekly series of enthusiastic posts, contributed by HILOBROW friends and regulars, on the topic of our favorite comic books, comic strips, and graphic novels.
If Mad Max’s indomitable, truck-driving Imperator Furiosa had a cousin with a familial penchant for shaved hairstyles, questionable sanity, a wardrobe that could have been provided by Vivienne Westwood, a kangaroo boyfriend, and the mouth of a proverbial drunken sailor, she’d be the main character of Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin’s creation. Tank Girl — protagonist of the 1988–1995 comic strip, which appeared in the British magazine Deadline — is a punk rock female who drives a tank, brandishes weapons in situations of variable purpose, and spends her time with other charismatic transportation appreciators — Sub Girl and Jet Girl, to be specific. The storytelling is messy, and Tank Girl herself is dirty, in many senses of the term.
In all of her fierce, sometimes grotesque, unapologetic badass-ness, Tank Girl entered my pantheon of role models while I was at an impressionable age. It doesn’t matter that I don’t think that the writers’ humor is particularly funny, and I likely will never understand all of the pop culture references embedded within. I’ll never be as flashy or as loud or as adept with weapons, but Hewlett and Martin’s reimagination of what a girl could be (according to interviews, a girl modeled as an ode to women they knew) provided a societal funhouse mirror to conceptual boundary conditions placed somewhere in Australia — a far distance from the buttoned up American Midwestern world within which I lived.
Tank Girl is audacious. She could conquer the world… if she felt like trying to do so.
