DUM-DUM POSSE READER
Like all of Ron Regé Jr’s comics, Dum-Dum Posse Reader (1995) has no precedent. It arrives out of nowhere. We are introduced to a baffling but alluring sequence of visual symbols and incidents that lure us in even if we don’t quite understand why we like them. A few pages in, Ron stops the proceedings and has a Cartoon Professor (who immediately morphs into Cartoon Ron) explicitly state all to us. This sequence is part of the charm. Ron knows that his world is hard to figure out but it needs to be difficult. Having a character flat-out explain what’s happening could be deadly in anyone else’s hands but here it charms us. Dum-Dum Posse Reader is fascinating because we’re watching one of the most unique comics voices figure out how to communicate. There are radical shifts in art style and design. Significantly, Ron moves from a highly idiosyncratic, tough-to-decode style to something clearer and less cluttered and easier to read. It’s the transition from the scratchiness of punk/new-wave comix to the more personal storytelling of zines. This transition is important because Ron presents everything with a wide-eyed wonder, and the abrasiveness of the punk style doesn’t suit the story he wants to tell. His character seems newly on his own and his curiosity and boundless love is overflowing. He’s practically a child becoming aware of his love for friends, lovers, experiences, places, music, and art-making. This is reflected in his text which sometimes contains dated youthful proclamations but quickly matures into profound and simple observations about his immediate relationships and surrounding. Twenty-five years ago a great artist started searching and he hasn’t stopped.
