FERB YOUR ENTHUSIASM (1)

One in a series of 25 enthusiastic posts, contributed by 25 HILOBROW friends and regulars, on the topic of our favorite animated TV series.
STEVEN UNIVERSE | REBECCA SUGAR | 2013–2019
Steven Universe’s origin story rings truer than the Oedipus complex. His mother, Rose Quartz, née Pink Diamond, faked her own death in order to fight diamond-kind. For children who grew up, as I did, in situations where people are liable to disappear, go underground, live with fake names and assumed identities, this reads as realism.
A child of the universe and a child of the earth, part star and part human, he is half gem on his mother’s side. What is the cultural heritage of a star child? Those of us raised by feminist hippy activists could tell you.
In actor network theory, objects have agency. Actants, they cause things to happen. Compare the agency of an average person with that of a melting glacier, or a diamond. In the universe of Steven Universe, as in ours, diamonds (the hardest of minerals, formed under great pressure hundreds of miles below the earth) are agents of genocidal violence.
Steven Universe plays the ukulele and lives in a collective of warrior women, the Crystal Gems: Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, stone butches you might say. Their humanoid forms are emanations of a gemstone essence, mutable, elemental projections, personifications, so to speak, of the earth. Aren’t we all? A gemstone is a piece of mineral crystal: we’re 6% mineral, striated by tiny amounts of elements. We contain germanium, antimony, silver, niobium, lanthanum, tellurium, bismuth, thallium, gold, and radioactive elements like thorium, uranium, and radium. We are, that is, kin to the inorganic, citizens of a mineral polity. Everyone’s last name is universe.
