The public library belongs to me. The public library belongs to everyone, more than any other institution in America. It’s a minor miracle that the system mostly works. I don’t have to buy something to use the bathroom in the library. I can read books there, or I can have library workers get me almost any book from another library. Libraries get along with each other, by design. Their systems are interoperable and librarians work to keep them that way. They’re not in competition for my business. In fact, they don’t care about my business much at all except to help me with it if I want help.
Libraries don’t upgrade and leave me unable to interact with them because I can’t afford to upgrade. Libraries are available to me if I have no money at all, am having a bad hair day, or ran out of clean clothes. Libraries are abolishing fines to reduce already-low barriers for library use and enjoyment. Libraries offer a warm place in the winter and a cool place in the summer, where you can be alone with your thoughts in a safe environment or work with others when no one has an office.
Libraries say, “As a culture we like to know things. We value knowing things. We care enough about your right to know things, anything you want, that we created an institution for you to satisfy your information needs no matter who you are or what the rest of your life is like.” Libraries say, “We all work together as communities to help each other learn.”
Every single person has the right to enter a public library and every single building is accessible so they can. Libraries operate in public, for the public and by the public. A good library is as good as America gets.
