Grok My Enthusiasm (13)

In the mid-Eighties, my friend Lindsay worked for the filmmaker Frederick Wiseman. She hired a few of us to clean the basement of his house in Cambridge, MA. We spent a week or so going through film cans packed with unspooled outtakes. We’d hand Lindsay a scrap of film and she’d squint at it in the light from the open door. “Seraphita’s Diary,” she’d say. “The Store. Basic Training.” We’d coil up the film and label the tin with masking tape.
Things we found in Fred’s basement: his son’s bong, an unlabeled print of Titicut Follies, and this 1973 Sears Roebuck Spring/Summer catalog, which I slipped into my bag without asking.
A sticker on the cover gives the phone number of my childhood Sears store at 1815 Massachusetts Ave, where all my green Tuffskins and snorkel jackets came from, where I used to hang out after school admiring fishing lures and sitting on riding lawnmowers. The building was four-square Art Deco with a squat central tower. Seeing Sears stores in other towns and cities, I recognized their Searsness, and this thrilled me. The Cambridge of my childhood was still dominated by five and dimes, cobblers, mealworm-infested health food stores, and florists that only sold three kinds of flowers. Sears was our theme park of American consumer culture.
So I already had a thing for Sears when I got ahold of this 1973 catalog. The store on Mass Ave had recently closed and been repurposed in the Lesley College expansion, and maybe that’s why I wanted it. It was like a family photo album of a parallel childhood — one decorated with swag lamps and shag carpeting. The oily thumbprints on the cover and the inscription (HOLY BIBLE) attest to the use I made of it: as a visual dictionary for thirty years of art making.
