WOWEE ZOWEE (31)

One in a series of enthusiastic posts, contributed by HILOBROW friends and regulars, on the subject of our favorite albums of the Nineties (1994–2003). A new installment in this series will appear each Wednesday during 2018.
INVINCIBLE SUMMER | k.d. lang | 2000
In the year 2000 I needed frequent stimulus from the sensory immersion tank of k.d. lang’s Invincible Summer — a simulation of sun and surf and a sea of sound in which distances were endless and meaningless. “Summerfling” was neo-beachsploitation movie-theme with all the period-specific Cold War anxiety that made such escapism necessary stripped out; “Suddenly” and “Love’s Great Ocean” each a sonic aquarium of the sedative bloops and swooshes that made electronica the background music for millennials’ age of innocence. A bit after the fact, but that was part of the point — these were the soothing, syncopated sounds of the cherished, permanent future; a digital sublime not giving the cold comfort of an antiseptic techtopia, but the suffusing calm of perfected VR landscapes and atmospheres; the lost chords and tones found by superprocessors and unlocking the code of paradise. We were adrift over the edge of Y2K, the album riding a sine wave of surf-rock and psychedelia and disco spiking up out of its dark expanse and ours. lang reached even further across circular time than the pop-chart era, closing a circuit with Sapphic sanctifications of the romantic and the outer edge of mystical physics — “When we collide, a universe of stars fill our eyes; when we collide, like heaven has exploded inside.” The blood-feuds of my birth millennium were behind us and the barbarism of the current one was about to dawn, but lang was invoking Camus’ mitzvah that in the midst of winter he found within him an invincible summer. Punk and gangsta and many martial musics are what flare up when new ground needs breaking, but croon and drone and other pastoral manifestos are a placid place we can go inside. Not hidden in but carried; not innocence lost but peace preserved. Flooded in sunlight, floating between the shores of centuries, Invincible Summer is a source of serenity that won’t turn back and can’t ever disappear from sight.
