One in a series of enthusiastic posts, contributed by HILOBROW friends and regulars, on the subject of our favorite albums of the Nineties (1994–2003). A new installment in this series will appear each Wednesday during 2018.

HURRAH | VERSUS | 2000

How do you feel closure after a breakup that involves moving out of a shared space? Who gets what, keep it or toss it, where do the utility bills go? My first apartment in Los Angeles had a body-shaped stain on its tan wall-to-wall carpet. We moved in and appreciated our clown neighbor, Hiccups, and the windowless German bar we could walk to, and the local candlelight vigil on September 11th. We ignored the body for a while.

Hurrah is a dreamy shroud of a record. As I was recovering from that daring but stupid, formative, ill-advised cross-country move to LA, it upset and comforted me as the breakup went on and on. “Tiptoed around the house while it was crumbling down. By the time we emerged, we were strangers.” He wasn’t the one who got away, and neither was I. He wasn’t the one I got away from, either. That one came later.

I continued to soundtrack doomed relationships with this music into my 30s. How seductive it is to know an ending is inevitable — it’s OK to stop trying. “We don’t have to hold our breath. We don’t have to play dead. We don’t have to pretend we’re married.” I still love this record so much, and I still love him so much. I don’t know if he’s heard it.
