WOWEE ZOWEE (40)

One in a series of enthusiastic posts, contributed by HILOBROW friends and regulars, on the subject of our favorite albums of the Nineties (1994–2003). A new installment in this series will appear each Wednesday during 2018.
LIVE THROUGH THIS | HOLE | 1994
Courtney Love is my spirit train wreck. She had a crazy childhood, a painful adolescence, and tumultuous adulthood that was one of the kookiest roller coaster rides — she’s got a LOTTA BAGGAGE to say the least, but I still dig her because she’s able to write great songs about her thoughts, feelings, and experiences… and I think her tour-de-force is the Hole album, Live Through This.
The overall theme is about her ability to triumph over adversity, heartache, misogyny, and abuse. She does a LOTTA SCREAMING, and I think it’s all justified. The best known song that I think sums up the vibe of this album is “Miss World.” “I made my bed I lied in it, I made my bed, I died in it” — I want you to listen to it and you’ll see why I think this album is a must have. Other favorite cuts are “Doll Parts,” “Plump,” and “Rock Star.” I remember when this album came out and all of the crowing about how it’s a FEMINIST ANTHEM, and all that jazz. I don’t hang that label on it, despite understanding why a lot of people said that — because to me, the album unfolds like a diary set to music… not a deliberate anthem like Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman.”
The irony of all the feminist talk is that she OBVIOUSLY had help from her husband, this album is leaps and bounds better than the previous Hole records. I don’t know how much he helped her, but it’s easy to hear how much better the songwriting and production are. It may take you a few times to get through it, but I think it will grow on you, especially if you’re a woman who needs to work out some frustrations. YELL, IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER!
