One in a series of enthusiastic posts, contributed by HILOBROW friends and regulars, on the subject of our favorite albums of the Nineties (1994–2003). A new installment in this series will appear each Wednesday during 2018.

THE TEACHES OF PEACHES | PEACHES | 2000

I like the innocent type, deer in the headlight, rocking me all night, flexing his might, doing it right.

In the year 2000 I was thirteen years old and I knew more about sex than I ought to, like most thirteen year olds, and half of it was from the traditional sources: groping boys, leering men, frightening catcallers as I tried to go about my day. But the other half of my sexual knowledge came from the internet.

The early internet was full of magic and especially full of sex. Fanfic written by women taught me that desire could be multifarious and didn’t necessarily involve the big-tits-and-cumshots I’d glimpsed in porno mags. The earliest camgirls milked men for money, and I idolized them, imagining what it would be like to turn the demanding, seeking, controlling male gaze into something that gave me power and profit. And LimeWire gave me the Teaches Of Peaches, the exact album I needed to hear.

A parent’s worst nightmare: your little baby, introduced to the milquetoast Spice Girls in the mid 90s, now takes a hard right turn into raunch. You think I’m little wanna play me like a fiddle I’m not so brittle come diddle my skittle cause there’s only one peach with the hole in the middle. The corrupting power of the internet.

But that’s wrong. Sex was coming for me whether I wanted it or not, and sex outside of Peaches was something done to women, something you had to avoid, something you had to fear, something you had to reject, and yet something that would inevitably come and defile you, like it or not. Peaches says: Fuck all of ’em. Literally and figuratively. You can control your body and you can control your sex. She chants IUD, SIS, stay in school cuz it’s the best. The message is both ironic and serious. School sucks but you don’t want to get pregnant. The good news is: you can be a cyborg, not a goddess. A little piece of metal makes it possible.

You want to see the crazy bitches go wild? I can do that. But I’ll be doing it. It won’t be something done to me.
