WUF TICKET | “YA MAMA” | 1982

“You got a lot of nerve to talk about me — at least my family don’t live in a tree!” says a guy to another guy. Surely he’s joking… but he sounds serious. How to respond? Like so: “You live in a tree, you eat coconuts — and your whole family’s got buffalo butts!”

In the 1970s and early ’80s, I attended elementary and middle school in Boston’s Dorchester, Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain neighborhoods, where — in each unsupervised corner of the cafeteria and playground — aggressive and rhyming interlocution was at all times the order of business. I’ve since heard this activity described as “playing the dozens,” but I knew it as “selling woof tickets.” Which is why I was so tickled, at age 15, when a novelty record, by an insult-swapping duo who called themselves Wuf Ticket, began circulating in samizdat (that is, via re-duped cassette tapes).

An adolescent’s mental wiring is a hot mess: all those early neural connections are in the process of being unplugged and replugged. An adolescent boldly approaches adulthood while yearning for the security of childhood. That’s why selling woof tickets — which is to say ribbing, or jiving, or even joshing — hits the spot. Dialoguing in a semi-joking, semi-threatening manner; Hegelians call this sort of thing the “negation of negation.” It feels great.

“Rapper’s Delight,” which I played over the Martin Luther King Jr. School’s intercom a few times during the 1979–80 school year, when it was my turn to make the morning announcements, was brilliant because: Superman’s costume makes him look like a fairy! Wonder Mike’s friend’s mother serves rotten chicken! But I wanted more, more, more. Jack Malken and James Mason’s “Ya Mama” (which seemed so mean-spirited that it was banned from Boston’s airwaves, but which concludes with uplifting lines like “My mama’s smart, she’s got a college degree. She’s going back to school to get her Ph.D.”) stimulated my brain’s ventral tegmental area. Dopamine flooded my nucleus accumbens, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and septal area. I trembled with pleasure.

In some unsupervised corner of my mind, “Ya Mama” has never stopped playing.
