TUBE YOUR ENTHUSIASM (CODA 1)
August 27, 2018
One of two codas to HILOBROW’s series of enthusiastic posts analyzing and celebrating a few of our favorite TV shows from the Fifties (1954–1963). These Merrie Melodies shorts first aired just before the Fifties — as HILOBROW’s periodization schema delimits that era — began.
I’ve always been a big fan, and my favorites have been and will always be the old-school Warner Brothers Cartoons — the Chuck Jones-directed shorts, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and a few others that featured different characters… one of my all time faves is “Feed The Kitty” (1952) which lead me to “Kiss Me Cat” (1953).
They both feature a big brown Bulldog named Marc Anthony, and the cutest little kitten ever, named Pussyfoot. We get introduced to them in “Feed The Kitty” — Marc Anthony finds Pussyfoot while he is outside, falls in love with her and wants to keep her. He has to hide her from his owner, a woman who is very no nonsense and doesn’t want him to bring anything else into the house… but in the end, she lets Marc Anthony keep the kitten.
In “Kiss Me Cat” they have a little adventure. Marc and Pussyfoot have to get rid of a mouse, or the kitten will have to go, according to their owners, a married couple (we only see their legs and hear their voices) who are keeping an eye on the situation. Marc Anthony quickly tries to teach Pussyfoot how to be a “mouser” — which doesn’t work out well at all, but after some crazy antics, he eventually figures out how to get rid of the mice.
The best part of these cartoons is the music (Music Direction by the GENIUS Carl Stalling). The scores are so fabulous with the way they interpret the action, you could close your eyes and pretty much imagine everything that happens (along with sounds like footsteps, things falling, a blender, etc.) When Marc Anthony wags his finger at Pussyfoot (an oboe to indicate anger) they use an adorable piccolo as the background for Pussyfoot playfully batting at Marc Anthony’s finger… ALL of the music cues are fantastic!
This is 7:08 of pure bliss! While writing this article, I watched them both 10 times, and cracked up every time — and I think you will too.
