URINAL SHRINE

In May of 2002, I was many things: teacher, paid audience member of a TV show, struggling artist, house painter, wanna-be club kid and member of the artist collective “Test Site.” The latter had offered me the opportunity to create installation art in the Congress Theater, a 2,900 seat, palace-like, historic Chicago landmark on the brink of demolition. Earlier that spring, I had witnessed some fringe art events there. One showcased the works of young professional fashion designers by having their models struggle through a military-grade boot camp obstacle course; all while the sound and video of fighter jets were projected on the walls. Another show was a classical ballet production of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.” Despite the respectable atmosphere of theater, there was some edgy stuff going on there, and I was prepared to do likewise.

I immediately claimed the men’s room for my project and Sex and Drugs as my themes. I screen printed life-sized male and female pinup models on giant mirrors, which leaned against the walls. Below these were several silver platters of novelty imitation vomit, with designer labels (Chanel, Vuitton, etc.) hand printed and sewn to each rubber puddle. A large parody Holy Trinity shrine was placed above the urinals, displaying mug shots of George Michael, Paul Reubens, and Robert Downey Jr. Below these were a row of gold-leafed beer bottles, each with a Polaroid photo of inebriated night clubbers taped to the label. And among them were numerous vintage cupid holiday cut-outs, either smoking bongs or 69-ing. The outside of the stalls were decorated with large, flesh-colored mandalas, created by literally cutting and pasting hundreds, if not thousands, of nude pin-up playing cards. I had a musical loop of the sleaziest music I could find playing from a boom box’s audiocassette. One visitor told me he appreciated hearing Iggy Pop’s “Penetration” during his bathroom trip.

None of this won me a rave review anywhere, nor did it convince anyone that I was some super cool provocateur. But, hey, the mandalas sold for a good price! And better yet, two blurry photos featuring one of them, the beer bottles and cupids are forever documented here.
