One in a series of enthusiastic posts, contributed by HILOBROW friends and regulars, on the subject of our favorite albums of the Nineties (1994–2003). A new installment in this series will appear each Wednesday during 2018.
Talking to Gilles Peterson for some magazine that summer before, poolside at some Sunset Strip hotel, I observed that our narrow, insouciant generation had never faced any sweeping challenge of character, and what was to be made of that?
I had acquired nine-tenths possession of a once-magnificent, Havana-style pink palace with a secret tropical solarium, rotting in a vintage Los Angeles neighborhood where the spindly palm trees lined the noir boulevards. We had saturated the place with twin fumaroles of cigarette smoke and encaustic fumes; at night, we escaped to Koreatown, drinking at the Prince and eating at Taylor’s steak house where all the waitresses were 70 and called you honey.
The dreadful business surrounding the election left us stunned and bloodless, and our signature funereal savories — Low, Smog, Cat Power, Palace, Arab Strap, Elliott Smith, the Jackass B-sides — quickly became unbearable, along with the headlines. We started giving these insane parties, even though we were more than less broke, and extravagant soundtrack-crafting for each event became a repository for some expert denial. I was on permanent safari for anything French and bubbly, Hello Kitty twee, Mod Ipanema or Sea-y and Cake-y to mix and mingle with our still-wet canvases and ratty mid-century decor.
Stereolab’s elegant, literate cocktail of electrons and melancholy was the alpha and the omega of our junior pretensions. Sound-Dust hit the record stores that last Tuesday in August, and I still have a detailed image in my mind of the ceremonial de-cellophaning. The record commenced in typical fashion — like an urgent message from outer space. The second track began likewise before exploding into what can only be described as a %$#@! happy jam, buoyant and loping, followed by the bouncy, keyboard-banging, relatively anthemic “Captain Easychord,” complete with trumpet flourishes and slide guitar. Our long national nightmare is over, set to music. And I believed it, in that brief lull, in that dead airtime over those last, languid, precious weeks of summer.
At a sufficient distance, a pivoting figure appears to slow to a halt, just for a moment.
The next year hit Stereolab pretty hard. Laetitia and Tim apparently split up and then their beloved band member Mary Hansen was killed in a terrible accident.
A decade later, I passed by Laetitia at a solo performance. We exchanged glances and I tapped my heart with my palm, as a hello.
