Some artists come so far with each leap, that their work is continuously lending itself to reassessment. Each new statement casts the previous work in new contexts. And that kind of study benefits from the completism of the obsessive. Which can be aided, in turn, by the scope of a retrospective.
Joan Semmel has such a career-wide survey on view this autumn to early spring at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and for some of us, it’s the latest plateau on a path long traveled. Semmel’s work answered my lefty art-student prayers in the Reagan era, the fandom kicking to another level when I learned she taught at the same school. Her signature work, started in the mid-1970s — nude self-portraits in almost surreally foreshortened perspective, from the vantage point of how the model sees herself, thus foregrounding the female view over the male gaze — were the self-evident truth of personal testament and political implication, radical statement and commercially undeniable eloquence, that seemed so elusive a decade later.
She’d already moved on, subverting the seraglio trope with scenes from gyms and women’s locker rooms which affirmed the uniqueness of human bodies at a time of pop obsession with the “perfecting” of a single type. By the late ’90s she was commenting with characteristic wry subtlety on female objectification, by painting the portraits of actual objects: mannequins, nude, sometimes dismembered, with mythic associations, grim subtexts and eerie, ascendant personality.
The “posthuman” aesthetic of ’90s club culture (at that uneasy moment of contested identities and incipient cybernetics) was reflected in these paintings too, which is one of those points where the perennial assessment comes in. Artists like Semmel may eschew the currents of mass culture, but their discerning eye is still taking in all that surrounds them, and Semmel has processed and redefined the “photorealism” popular in ’70s painting with her hyper-lifelike self-portraits of the period; the “neo-expressionism” in vogue when her later versions took on a more brash gestural touch; on up through the graphic-design outlining used to such vivid effect amidst her richly modeled work of the late 2010s and early 2020s, or the internet-backdrop colorfields her multiple forms float through in a monumental canvas like 2019’s Skin in the Game.
Shades of self, eternal moments in time, are the concern of this current crossroads where we sense the end of many histories, and pop-culture grows preoccupied with parallel universes and alternate timelines. Layers, not sequence, are also what’s most meaningful to the work Semmel is doing now, as a decades-breadth visual vocabulary rises in chorus.
What’s remarkable about these images is not so much their dynamic disjunction as their phenomenal consistency; the figures seem to be pulsing between states of being, from the most photographically rendered form to the faintest suggestion of volume, from expressionist stylization to almost purely abstract passages. This is pluralism distilled to a painterly language, the never-static self that’s recognizable to a time of racial reckoning, trans awareness and bodily acceptance.
A summation, but only so-far.
