LOST OBJECTS (48)

One in an ongoing series of nonfiction stories about lost objects. In 2017, Project:Object’s Josh Glenn and Rob Walker asked 25 writers to tell us about a significant object they’d lost (or thrown away, or destroyed), then assigned these stories to 25 illustrators. The first Lost Objects series was such a hit with readers, and so fun for us to publish, that we’ve decided it deserves a sequel.

UPDATE: The Lost Objects book was published in September 2022 by Hat & Beard Press. Check it out!

I’m on a road trip, sometime in the early Seventies. It’s summer, because that’s mostly when our family travels, our family which consists of my parents and me. Dad is driving, Mom is charged with managing the AAA TripTik that shows our route, and with noting the gas prices and miles traveled in a small notebook that Dad will later use to calculate the car’s energy efficiency and how well we’re staying within the vacation budget.

I’m in the back seat. I may even be sufficiently young to be in a child safety seat, although my memory is unclear on this point. What’s more important than where I’m sitting is what I’m holding: a beloved Raggedy Ann finger puppet.

She is three inches tall. She is wearing a blue dress with white flowers with red centers. The dress has a white collar and she wears a white apron over it, with a single pocket. She looks benevolent but slightly puzzled. One hand rests at her hips, the other at the side of her head as though patting her red hair back into place, or perhaps as though she’d been about to wave to greet someone and then realized, abashed, that they were a stranger.

I don’t recall the details of her appearance this precisely unaided; eBay listings gave me her height and many photos in and out of her Knickerbocker Company packaging, Raggedy Anns pristine and Raggedy Anns with colors faded and worn away.

But in our car on the roadtrip in the summer in the early Seventies, she’s alive. And, like me, she thinks it’s too hot and stuffy.

She’s alive in part because all toys are to me, but she’s alive especially because of her size, proportionate to my hand, and how she can move, how I can forget for a while that it’s my hand moving her.

I can’t do much to make her more comfortable. We don’t have air conditioning. Well, we do, in a way. We have what my parents call the four-fifty air conditioner: all four windows down, fifty miles an hour.

I can reach the crank to roll down the window.

I can perch Raggedy Ann on the ledge to enjoy the breeze.

And then I can scream, as she sails off my hand and away.
