LOST OBJECTS (33)
October 24, 2019
One in an ongoing series of nonfiction stories about lost objects. In 2017, Project:Object’s Josh Glenn and Rob Walker asked 25 writers to tell us about a significant object they’d lost (or thrown away, or destroyed), then assigned these stories to 25 illustrators. The first Lost Objects series was such a hit with readers, and so fun for us to publish, that we’ve decided it deserves a sequel.

Growing up, many of my toys were donated to us by family friends, and the rest were off-brand with factory defects. One of my favorite things to do was to come up with creative solutions for using my broken toys to my advantage.
When my parents refused to buy me a Ken doll, I used a cheap off-brand Barbie that had hair only on the top of her head, and I drew a man’s face on the bald spot on the back of her head. I would switch genders by turning the doll’s head back and forth. That way, I got a male Barbie, and also learned about gender fluidity.
To substitute for a dollhouse which I didn’t have, I drew rooms on different pages of a notebook, and those were used as backdrops for different scenes. I would duct-tape, sew and doodle missing pieces on Erector sets and Lego houses, turning them into readymade art objects.
Also, most of our puzzles had missing pieces. It was very frustrating as a kid, that lack of closure. To put so much work into something, and not be able to finish. As I grew older, I started thinking that having a puzzle with missing pieces was a good preparation for life: you never get to see the complete picture. But, I also thought: not having all the pieces doesn’t mean you should stop being curious, or stop trying to see the big picture. Perhaps seeing what’s missing is as important as seeing what’s there.
That said, if you happen to come across some puzzle pieces with cats in a rainy garden sitting in a basket, please let me know!
