LOST OBJECTS (43)

One in an ongoing series of nonfiction stories about lost objects. In 2017, Project:Object’s Josh Glenn and Rob Walker asked 25 writers to tell us about a significant object they’d lost (or thrown away, or destroyed), then assigned these stories to 25 illustrators. The first Lost Objects series was such a hit with readers, and so fun for us to publish, that we’ve decided it deserves a sequel.

UPDATE: The Lost Objects book was published in September 2022 by Hat & Beard Press. Check it out!

When I was 13, I attended secundaria (junior high school) at Abraham Lincoln #32 in Rosario Beach, México. Although I loved basketball, I wasn’t very good at it. I was fast, though, so I was invited to join the track team. After I did well in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and triple jump, I begged my mother to buy me a really nice pair of track shoes. We had a meet coming up, to determine which teams would make it to the regional finals — and after a while, my mother gave in. I wore my track shoes to one practice, and I felt that I could fly. I would never wear them again.

My school was divided into two sessions: students attended either in the morning, or the evening. I was a morning student, while the girl I fancied, Elida, was an evening student — so I rarely saw her. Elida was the second cousin of a friend of mine; she had very long eyelashes that hid her beautiful hazel eyes. She was shy, and I was awkward. We would meet after my school day had ended, and before hers started, and talk for 45 minutes about our classes, our teachers and classmates.

The day before our semi-regional track meet, I met with Elida as usual. She asked what was in the plastic bag I was carrying, and I proudly showed her my new track shoes. We talked about that day’s meet, and she wished me luck. As we said goodbye, we kissed each other on the cheek. I walked home very happily, thinking of Elida — so it wasn’t until some time later that I realized I’d left the shoes behind.

Did I go back to our meeting place to look for the shoes? I’d like to believe that I did, but it’s possible that I didn’t. I didn’t admit to my mother that I’d lost the shoes. I never got to wear them in a track meet. How could I have lost something so important to me, I ask myself. The answer: I was distracted by Elida’s beautiful shy eyes.
