STERANKOISMS (1)

One in a series of ten posts contributed by HILOBROW friend Douglas Wolk, whose ALL OF THE MARVELS tumblr documents what he’s been reading for his forthcoming book.

Between 1966 and 1970, Jim Steranko drew seven complete Marvel comic books — four issues of Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and three of Captain America — and stories in 22 other issues. Comics artists have been drawing tributes to his work ever since. Steranko is particularly known for his cover art, but this series spotlights other artists’ homages to his interior page design.

The earliest Steranko homage I’ve seen is Arnold Drake, Frank Springer and Tom Sutton’s parody of “Dark Moon Rise, Hell Hound Kill!” in Not Brand Echh #11, cover-dated December 1968, four months after Steranko’s original version had appeared in Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #3. (By then, Springer had already taken over for Steranko as Nick Fury‘s artist.)

The “art-in-lettering” effect turned up again a year later in Gary Friedrich, Herb Trimpe and Sam Grainger’s opening page of Nick Fury #14, and reappeared in one of the earliest Black Panther solo stories, 1974’s Jungle Action #8, by Don McGregor, Rich Buckler and Klaus Janson. John Byrne’s opening page from 1984’s Alpha Flight #13 takes after the image in the “Dark Moon Rise” title splash, rather than its text. And a page from the sixth issue of last year’s Nick Fury series by James Robinson and ACO rearranges the whole composition.
