CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE (4)
December 13, 2020
The New York City seen in Marvel’s comic books is recognizably the one in which the publisher has its headquarters. Douglas Wolk’s latest HILOBROW series, CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE, spotlights some of Marvel’s images of Times Square, documenting the neighborhood’s architecture and advertisements as they’ve changed over time. Wolk’s forthcoming book, All of the Marvels, will be published by Penguin in Fall 2021.
A Winston cigarette billboard that blew smoke rings every few seconds was displayed at 45th Street and Broadway from 1972 to 1977 (a similar Camel billboard had been in Times Square from 1941 to 1966), next to a Gordon’s Gin billboard. They made notable appearances in 1975’s Daredevil #119 (by Tony Isabella, Bob Brown and Don Heck), 1976’s Daredevil Annual #4 (by Marv Wolfman, Chris Claremont, George Tuska and Frank Chiaramonte) and 1977’s Amazing Spider-Man #168 (by Len Wein, Ross Andru and Mike Esposito). And the Winston billboard mysteriously reappeared in 1989’s Cloak & Dagger and Power Pack: Shelter from the Storm graphic novel, although it hadn’t been in operation in twelve years at that point.
