STERANKOISMS (5)

One in a series of ten posts contributed by HILOBROW friend Douglas Wolk, whose ALL OF THE MARVELS tumblr documents what he’s been reading for his forthcoming book.

Between 1966 and 1970, Jim Steranko drew seven complete Marvel comic books — four issues of Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and three of Captain America — and stories in 22 other issues. Comics artists have been drawing tributes to his work ever since. Steranko is particularly known for his cover art, but this series spotlights other artists’ homages to his interior page design.

Steranko’s essence-of-1968 psychedelic swirl as an alien spaceship descends in Strange Tales #168 (inks by Joe Sinnott, colors apparently by Steranko himself) is echoed by a bit of architecture in 1988’s Nick Fury Vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. #4, by Bob Harras, Paul Neary, Kim DeMulder and Bernie Jaye. There’s a more direct callback to it in 2011’s Defenders #9, by Matt Fraction, Jamie McKelvie, Mike Norton and Dommo Aymara.
