BRUSSELS SPROUTS ON THE STALK
Leaf-fringe for sills and stairs
and veins for tiny windows, they become
arcologies: apartment-clusters found
in science fiction from the Seventies,
when everyone lived in towers a mile high,
rode vertically to work or school by tram,
and could not touch the ground
for fear of all the toxic outdoor air.
Green variables, they lose
their rougher outer leaf
when handled or subjected to the heat
of oven, saucepan or a bright July.
Our old plans fail; our new ones are
too slight
to register. Above our stove, we try
to recognize our grief
or call to mind our fear
about our own green globe,
whose temperature rises year by year.
