One in a series of posts featuring pages from Hermenaut, a DIY intellectual zine/journal published by HILOBROW’s Josh Glenn from 1992 through 2000-01.
As a Reconstructionist, my design aesthetic has always been an engaged-ironic one. So I wanted Hermenaut to look like a type of periodical for which I felt both scorn and affection: the teen magazine. Also, my wife and friends and I were adult fans of Beverly Hills, 90210 — again, in an engaged-ironic way. RIP, Luke Perry.
The exclamation point didn’t last long.
PS: I thought “STILL ONLY $1.00” — for a first issue — was a good joke.
