The Kalevala is a sequence of folkloric songs, runes and charms from the Karelia region of Finland, collected in the field and concatenated into epic form by Dr. Elias Lonnrot (1803-1884). The versions presented here are not translations or transliterations — they are respectful bastardizations, working from the 1963 English version of the Kalevala produced by the versatile and witty Francis Peabody Magoun Jr.
SMÜT THE DOG PRAISES HIS SEAL QUEEN
[being a departure from The Kalevala, Rune 5]
Before I met you, lover, before, before,
I barked at the sea,
in loud futility,
while the breakers drummed their fingers
on the shore.
With hackles salty
and reasoning faulty
I barked and barked into the silvery glare
protesting everything that wasn’t there.
But then you took me, and I rode you down
into the seal-dark with a doggy frown,
my woolly paws on your shoulders bare,
your smooth cold shoulders, my
water-mare.
Oh in your slimy seal-womb hide me.
My last earth-breath expands inside me.
So let my dog-self die, let me fishify,
and where the long weeds fluctuate
we’ll mate.
