HILOBROW is pleased to present a series of 27 nine-line poems by our friend and contributor Franklin Bruno. Some have previously appeared, in print or online, in A Perimeter, Brooklyn Rail, Critical Quarterly, and The West Wind Review. This is their first complete publication.

KETJAK 3: THIS TIME IT’S PERSONAL

Café laptop policy structures
freelancer’s workday. Got a feeling
inside, I can explain. Godawful
pun on old advertising slogan
removed for further study. The large
orthochromatic pinwheel that makes
love to measure. From here you can read
the sex. In any job that must be
fun there is an element of dun.

DISCONTENT PROVIDER

Go-to guy for avant-garde effects
in mainstream entertainments (Eno,
Vorkapich). Vanilla pod flavors
dessert wine, five smooth stones imported
from adjoining poem. It isn’t all
dying fall, some is exhaustion, as
of permutations. The digital
analogue of ink by the barrel,
not on my idiolect you don’t.

OVERDELIVER (AND THROUGH THE WOODS)

The refugees disdain Tofurky.
If it floats, fucks or flies, rent don’t buy.
U.S. Constitution: our IPO.
Employed: a euphemism for used.
Nostalgia, utopia: mirrors.
Druggéd individualism.
Maximize your onscreen real-estate.
When the work is harder to find than do.
Even in freedom we dream of the law.

What do you think?

  1. Love this series so much. So many great Wildean inversions, such a rich dose of language. Keen social and cultural criticism. All within strict formal constraints. Amazing.
