HILOBROW is pleased to present a series of 27 nine-line poems by our friend and contributor Franklin Bruno. Some have previously appeared, in print or online, in A Perimeter, Brooklyn Rail, Critical Quarterly, and The West Wind Review. This is their first complete publication.

THE GHOST TWITTERER

Katy Perry: She’s 24 like
I’m 15. Not only do I see
you “as an individual,” I
see you as an individual
I especially dislike. Don’t fire
until you can see your reflection
in the robot’s crotchplate. Page of ones,
book of zeros. Mechanime, I
think I got something to say to you.

A STRANGER-OWNED RESOURCE

Flattening of affects, cartons. Can
heteronormativity please
go fuck itself? Code-switch or garden
variety mood swing? Spice counter
wedged in one corner of check-cashing
enterprise. Spectators don’t know how
to do anything but give money
and vomit. Plugged nickels, it turned out,
were actually quite expensive.

DANCING CLOSE TO THE REVENUE LINE

Hair removal is all we do. Heat
off skin, road. Say, for example, you
have enough time to make only one
of three possible sales calls. Peak shift,
scope creep, Overton window. “Vampires”
was an overstatement; lately I’m
inclined to think of them as human
wallwarts. Slate-blue notebook, ’96,
picked clean as cartoon chicken carcass.
