Hermenautic Tarot (42)
January 7, 2016
John Hilgart has asked 54 friends of HiLobrow to contribute to the Hermenautic Tarot — a comic-book rorschach creative writing experiment in symbol-making and oracular speechifying. Each contributor was randomly assigned a card from the 4 COLOR PRINTING CMYK deck, which was created by Tom Hart — using images from Hilgart’s own 4CP archive — to fundraise for the Sequential Artists Workshop. This series of posts will eventually become a booklet. UPDATE: In 2018, we are adding an additional 24 cards to the deck, in order to arrive at a cartomantically correct 78 in total.
Your eyes, lifetime-trained, seek out objects and, relating one to another, create a limited comprehension. Such as: Hiroshima, a day later. Or: The remains of a drive-in theater in Florida. Thus you explain; thus you situate in time and space; thus you exist.
But the goal, at moments like this, is to absorb only what is unseen and indescribable. A wind, a slowness, a coming on.
Go between the red dots that form the sky. Float among the colorless atoms that form Hiroshima and Florida, your body and others’ bodies. Stay there, ignoring substance as we sometimes ignore one truth to know another. Thus you un-explain; thus you de-situate; thus you exist. Not as what you believe you are, but as a ghost among ghosts.
But beware of staying too long. Alternate existences often, but wisely; float for a while, then return to comprehend and create substance. The atoms will carry on, the ghosts will wait.
