Lake Michigan Petoskey Stone

Petoskey stones are the fossilized remains of Hexagonaria percarinata coral colonies, which lived (“micro-carnivorously”) in warm, shallow seas during the Devonian period, approximately 350 million years ago, before being fossilized into bedrock. Later uncovered by glaciers, the fossils were formed into pebble-shaped stones as a result of glaciation, which ground down their rough edges and deposited them in Michigan’s lower peninsula.
The stone was named for an Ottawa chief, Chief Pet-O-Sega, son of a French fur trader and Ottawa mother. The city of Petoskey, Michigan, is also named after him.
Just a rabbit hole I went down one day. No doubt because I’m forever semi-consciously keeping an eye out for depictions of multiple “spheres” packed closely together.
