This Kirby-drawn cover makes me laugh because, if one were to take literally the title’s figurative use of the word “suspense,” one might misinterpret this publication as being one devoted to tales in which object are induced to hover, midair — in suspensus. It amuses me to pretend, as I gaze upon this comic, that Tales of Suspense was published by and for suspension-system engineers obsessed (in this instance, at least) with the sf-ish possibilities of antigravity tech.
Though I’ve glanced at many other Tales of Suspense covers, I haven’t found many examples of objects being suspended. (Also, as of issue 39 it just becomes Iron Man’s comic.) I did, however, come across the following excellent suspension-themed Kirby cover illustration…
