In 1996, the spectroscopists Richard E. Smalley, Robert F. Curl, and Harold W. Krotos shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discovery of buckminsterfullerene (the “buckyball”) and other fullerenes. These “carbon cages” resembling soccer balls opened up a whole new field of chemical study with practical applications in materials science, electronics, and nanotechnology that researchers are only beginning to uncover. Dr. Kroto traced his fascination with the molecule’s namesake to a 1967 trip to the World’s Fair in Montreal, where they’d visited Buckminster Fuller’s Expo Dome, the dynamic geometry of which helped inspire the discovery of the icosahedral symmetry of the spheroidal cage molecule.
