SCHEMATIZING (17)

One in a series of posts via which HILOBROW’S Josh Glenn will attempt to depict the intellectual and emotional highs and lows of developing a semiotic schema. Series dedicated to its target audience of one: Malcolm Evans.
Fooling around again with Stable Diffusion’s Stable Doodle — an app that converts crude sketches into detailed “art” using generative AI — I drew a rough outline of the G-schema, selected “comic book” as the style, and… here’s the result.
A few notes.
- Interesting that each of the G-schema’s territories and thematic complexes becomes a comic-book panel. This is far more engaging and fun than any of my actual diagrams. I should collaborate with one of my illustrator/cartoonist friends to create something like this for real.
- I really enjoy how the space outside the diagram is also filled up — as though to suggest that this particular “semiosphere” is not as self-contained as it may seem. Its energies explode outward… and presumably there are influences from outside that make their way inside too. Again, this is more accurate and useful, in a way, than my schema.
- This sort of thing could (potentially) be an attractive and intriguing artwork that people would want to hang on their wall and consult from time to time. Not the case with my diagrams, I’m sure.
