To celebrate the one-year anniversary of 4CP, HiLobrow invited guest curators to assemble themed comic-book-detail galleries from 4CP’s collection. Click here to see all galleries.
CURATOR: MATTHEW BATTLES
HiLobrow likes pipes, but it seems like the cigarette is the preferred smoking medium of the comic. As in film, the comic cigarette billows and burns with inspiration, contemplation, pleasure, danger, and idleness. Comics, the movies, and cigarettes — all three combine mass production with the possibilities of individual experience. But in the first two — and if we believe Derrida, even with the third — it’s always a case of ceci n’est pas une cigarette.

What do you think?
Matthew, there are pipes in there too, in the mouths of respectable and scientific middlebrow men. The corporate bosses, unreformed ethnics, and Kremlin heavies opt for cigars. But to our 4CP eyes, only cigarettes are sublime.
The versatility of the comic book cigarette collapses, however, when the smoker is female: http://4cp.posterous.com/cigarettes
Nice one, John! And I liked your essay on the Problem of Superman’s Face at TCJ recently:
