LINOCUT 2020 (INTRO)

We are delighted to present LINOCUT 2020, a series of prints created in 2020 by HILOBROW friend Lawry Hutcheson.

I’ve been making linoleum block printed calendars for three years now. This series features my twelve monthly images from 2020.

I’d done silkscreen printing before, but I wasn’t inspired to try my hand at lino printing until one of my colleagues had us do a cut-an-eraser-into-a-stamp activity at a staff retreat. I was also inspired by the calendars from Bread and Puppet Theater.

There’s a lot to learn — and between my work and my kids, I don’t have so much time to devote to this activity. The calendar format has given me deadlines, though, so each month I just go for it and get a print done. If I mess something up, I know I’ll get another chance next month.

I get my ideas from what’s going on around me or how I’m feeling or what I’m thinking about. Most of the prints I’ve done are a mix of imagination, memory, and observation in different proportion. I generally try not to work from photographs.

How many copies of each print do I make? A dozen copies fit across the workshop, hanging up to dry, and that’s usually about when I feel like stopping. We keep one copy apiece for each of our three kids, to write things on; one for all of us; and one for the archive. The rest get distributed among family members.

Thanks for looking! The 2021 series is already underway….
