OFF-TOPIC

Adam McGovern (shown here) will continue to deliver over-the-transom, on-tangent essays, dialogues and subjective scholarship via his monthly-ish series OFF-TOPIC.

PLANET OF PERIL

Lynn Peril will continue to surface and dimensionalize examples of “pink think” — ideas and attitudes about what constitutes proper female behavior — among other things, via her PLANET OF PERIL series.

MEDIA DIET

The series MEDIA DIET will continue to explore the media “input” of a group of people — HILOBROW’s friends and contributors — whose “output” we admire. Here’s a sampling of our lineup for 3Q2026:

DEB CHACHRA | GORDON DAHLQUIST | JOE ALTERIO | VANESSA BERRY | MICHAEL GRASSO | DREW DANIEL.

Here’s an index page for the series.

RADIUM AGE PROTO-SF

HILOBROW’s Josh Glenn is editor of the RADIUM AGE series of reissued proto-sf adventures from the MIT Press. On August 25, the following title will be published:

  • Olaf Stapledon’s Last and First Men (abridged, August 25), introduced by Matthew De Abaitua. A dazzling work of science fiction to which Dune, the Foundation trilogy, and 2001: A Space Odyssey owe a major debt. “The boldest imaginings of Mr. Wells pale before the dreams of Mr. Stapledon.” — Oxford Magazine (1930)

From this point on, the Radium Age series will publish one title per season / two titles per year. Exciting forthcoming installments include four anthologies and one single-author collection; two of the anthologies and the collection are now being translated into English. Josh will oversee these projects during 3Q2026.

For the latest updates, please keep an eye on this page.

Frantisek Kupka’s “Drill” (1926)

In April, Josh kicked off EMANATIONS, a series of posts featuring 10 of his favorite examples of Radium Age-era fine art that explore a particular proto-sf-adjacent theme. The series’ 3Q2026 installments will include:

DEHUMANIZATION: MECHANIZATION. DISENCHANTMENT: ATOMIC SUBLIME | CHROMATIC SUBLIME | DIAGRAMMATIC SUBLIME | GEOPHYSICAL SUBLIME | RE-ENCHANTMENT | SCIENCE FANTASY | STOP MOTION.

As we have done since 2012, HILOBROW will continue to serialize some of Josh’s favorite Radium Age proto-sf stories and novels. Here’s the 3Q2026 lineup:

  • Jack London’s “Goliah” (1908/1910)
  • Gertrude Atherton’s Black Oxen (1923, excerpt)
  • Fred C. Smale’s “The V Force” (1913)
  • Arthur Machen’s The Terror (1916/17)

All serialized Radium Age proto-sf stories and novels here.

*

Man Ray’s Indestructible Object (1923; 1966 re-edition)

HILOBROW will publish further installments in the series RADIUM AGE POETRY. Here’s a sampling of the 3Q2026 lineup:

Aleksei Kruchenykh’s THE WORLD HAS ENDED | Kenneth Fearing’s NO CREDIT | I-to Wen’s THE DESERTED VILLAGE | Richard Wright’s I HAVE SEEN BLACK HANDS | Hirato Renkichi’s ENSEMBLE | William Carlos Williams’ LIGHT BECOMES DARKNESS | Edith Södergran’s A LIFE | Olaf Stapledon’s “IF GOD HAS NOT NOTICED…”

INCREASINGLY ERRATIC SERIES

During 3Q2026, we may publish further installments of James Parker’s swearing-animal musical, COCKY: THE OPERA. Or we may not.

ONE-OFF & OTHER SERIES

WONDER STORIES July 1934 pulp excerpt

The series NOT TODAY, EBAY will continue to share recent examples of stuff that Josh was tempted to purchase from eBay… but, heroically, didn’t.
