I loved the Housemartins for their short, happy, melodic, but often-quite-disturbing-on-closer-inspection pop songs. They specialized more in deliberate narrative incongruence, rather than congruence, which made them all the more engaging.
True confession, though, is that I made this cover more to be a commercial success than a reflection of the song’s repudiation of misogyny. I figured a fun poster about ‘Happy Hour’ might be a great success for those who have a home bar, down in the basement.
This poster was discovered by the Paul Heaton fan club in the UK; through them, an autographed (by Heaton, not me!) poster has been auctioned off to support local food banks in Manchester.
