In a recent issue of his terrific newsletter Burning Shore, HILOBROW friend Erik Davis listed a few “favorite, mostly West Coast, experimental animations.” Cross-posted with his permission, this series brings you Erik’s list. Enjoy! — ed.

JAMES WHITNEY | LAPIS | 1966

Both James and John Whitney were experimental animators, though John achieved more commercial recognition (he did the trippy opening sequence for Hitchcock’s Vertigo).

James was a mystic aesthete who painstakingly constructed the dot-work in his early film Yantra (1957) by hand. Lapis has a similar language, only this time Whitney plotted the points using an army surplus gun controller — a primitive analog anti-aircraft computer his brother found in a junk shop and modified. What results is the cybernetic mandala to beat all cybernetic mandalas, a swirling glittering whirlpool that ascends into the void.
