You are not ready. You may think you are, but you’re not.

To meet the aliens, that is. Take a look at what ready looks like. Ready looks like — South Africa.

Not because of dreams of District 9, and not because of the potential positioning of the Square Kilometer Array (the awesomely acronymed SKA). And not because of its elites, techno- or otherwise.

Because of its citizens.

In this impressive photographic array by Araminta de Clermont, South Africans display their intergalactic style. Being ready is not about money. It’s not about streamlining, or touchscreens, or even embedded chips and circuits. It is about attitude, and a certain flair. And if attitude can, in some cases, be measured in flair, then these folks have it to spare.

I mean, if you were an alien, why bother with bothering the odd cow or goat? Why haunt rural areas, or open up the black box of Area 51? Why wade your way through our orbiting space junk like so much seaweed unless it’s really worth it? Why bother, that is, unless people were making an effort?

Sure, people dress up at things like Burning Man. But Burning-Man-style events, and Burning Man style itself, is set aside. It is not integrated into the everyday. It is not ready.

This is ready.
