This series of WHITE STADIUM linocut prints, created during 2025 by HILOBROW friend and brother-in-law Lawry Hutcheson, are a subset of his LINOCUT 2025 series.

I went out early Sunday and Monday (3/2 & 3/3) to sketch the last piece of the East Grandstand before it came down. The snow’s gone but it got cold again; snot-drips freezing on the page. The tree in the triangle where I stood last week is gone with a little sign for a new planting. I went around to the left along Playstead Rd. and up the slope into the brush to get an angle. The last piece of the East Grandstand is in the foreground, with the West Grandstand (which it used to mirror) in the background.
It was quiet on Sunday. I only saw two people. A woman with her dog and a man in flip-flops and a t-shirt who told me he was drunk and his roommates had kicked him out and was there anything I could do to help him out? I got things laid out Sunday, but came back Monday to fill in details and sketch the trees. Trees take time to grow and time to draw. The lights were on in the trailer office and there were a couple of pickup trucks idling on the field by the time I got there 6am Monday. A bird singing. The voices of the workers carried as they picked their way over the rubble heap. “All the white stuff has to go.” “We’ll start up at six thirty.” I left to make breakfast while the diesel engines were warming up. Saw Jaime walking with his stick.
Most of this week seems to have been spent on site prep and rubble removal. There was a line of semi trucks along Walnut every morning. It’s disconcerting that something so large and old and fixed in my memory should vanish so quickly. But there was general agreement that the East Grandstand was beyond repair. It’s harder to see the trees come down and to imagine the massive structure they plan to build. And it will be harder when they start to demolish the West Grandstand*, which is not beyond repair and could be renovated to serve the needs to BPS and the city (ENC Alternate Plan ).
* They plan to gut the West Grandstand but keep the exterior facade
