I’d like to share this print and story of the demolition of the east grandstand of White Stadium in Franklin Park this past week.

I did the sketch standing in snow Monday 2/25 in between work and picking up the kids at the Hernandez. Met Nick, who lives in the neighborhood and was taking pictures. We shared thoughts and felt each other out until we met in shared opposition. Shook our heads together. Had to talk loud when joined by teenagers on motorbikes going around the triangle. Spring in the park. It got quiet again when a mounted park ranger came by. “Like Rome!”, he said, about the stadium. I asked after the horses, Otis and Fred, and learned which one he was on (I forget which) and that the other has actually passed away. I had to run to get the kids. I had enough of a sketch to transfer to linoleum during swim class and carved and printed between things and at night during the week. I went through the park every day to or from school. The space is open with more of the stadium and lots of the trees gone. You can see across where you couldn’t. The sound of jackhammers and chainsaws. Hard to watch. Nice to get past it but seeing all the basic maintenance and tree work that could be done in the rest of the park made me mad again. I did this print and am sending it out to feel like I’m doing something. I’ve sat through a lot of meetings on this. I don’t think the soccer stadium is a good idea. I’m angry about how it’s been pushed through. Looking at the alternative ENC plan unknots my gut. That’s what I’m for! Fix it up for BPS! Just let me put my effort toward getting that through instead of having to fight this! The history of the Southwest Corridor and the Orange line give me some hope.

Thanks for taking the time to look at this. I’m hoping to do another print next week. I don’t think any of the east grandstand will be left. Printmaking takes longer than demolition, I guess, and they seem to be rushing to get everything down before the court date on March 18.
