WHITE STADIUM (7)

This series of WHITE STADIUM linocut prints, created during 2025 by HILOBROW friend and brother-in-law Lawry Hutcheson, are a subset of his LINOCUT 2025 series.

This one is a bit different.
I noticed these logs when I was up in a tree making the drawing for May. They’re just inside the fence at the southeast corner of the construction site, to the left of entrance gate #2 by the basketball courts. They must have been cut for the East Grandstand and dragged to this spot. There’s evidence of mud and small rocks wedged in the bark. Since I noticed them in May, additional fencing was added to enclose them in their own little pen. I’m not sure why. Looking at the massive, ancient muscle of them I don’t think the chain link fence is going to hold them if they come back alive.
I did this one in color to show the red, inner bark at the various wounds and to experiment with a new method for multicolor printing I’ve been excited about. First I carved the block for the dark lines and then used this to register three additional blocks: one for gray, one for the yellow and red, and one for the two greens. The colors went on in semi-transparent layers over the line. Sort of like a coloring book. Interesting to plan and execute. Some unforeseen results, like the strange transition line in the grass.
