APRIL 2025

We spent a lot of time in Boston, this month, as we finished emptying out our house here.

April 2

I like how the price of the British comics magazine 2000 AD was advertised. One of many pieces of ephemera deacquisitioned this month.

Two of my nieces, in Jamaica Plain’s Franklin Park. Continuing a tradition, dating back to the 1960s, of Glenns letting their freak flags fly in this space. Happy birthday, Jane!

Sam, Kayla, Max, and Diana singing with my mother. Sometimes we sneak into the swanky assisted living building adjacent to her long-term chronic care facility.

I went through my Dungeons & Dragons stuff, dating back to c. 1980, trying to winnow it down. Among the artifacts surfaced: My brother Patrick’s character Wanda the Man-Thrasher, and an in-campaign recruitment advertisement created by John Dooley Cradock.

Scenes from Sam and Kayla’s engagement party on April 6th. So much fun.

Sam and Kayla, my six siblings and I, six in-laws, Max and twelve cousins (plus one on the way, barely visible at far left), plus my father and stepmother. Thanks to Kayla joining the family, we currently number thirty strong. We are a platoon.

Continuing to clear out the house. Here are examples of significant objects rendered doubly significant by the fact that I used them for my first objects-related book, Taking Things Seriously (2007).

In high school, HILOBROW friend Katie Hennessey got me into seeking out “wish rocks.” This gorgeous specimen appears on the cover of Taking Things Seriously. I’m keeping it.

The essay “Baudelaire’s Death Mask” (actually a Keats life mask) was my contribution to Taking Things Seriously. I’m going to see if Tom Nealon will take it off my hands. UPDATE: He did.

Cassette tape with 9-year-old Josh’s writing on the label. I believe that the title of this tape celebrates my patient effort to record the 1977 disco version of the Star Wars theme — off my awesome new clock radio / tape recorder — in its entirety.

My 1976–77 report card, William Monroe Trotter School (Dorchester, Mass.). Ms. Doucette wasn’t wrong about me.

My father and stepmother are also clearing out their home. Lydia — who is 25 yeaars younger than me — found this drawing of hers. From when I was a substitute teacher at the Rafael Hernandez School, and used to mind her and her siblings after school.

4/18

Perhaps one of our last visits to West Roxbury’s Stony Brook Reservation, an “urban forest” of which I’ve become very fond over the past 25 years.

Susan and I enjoyed HEIST!, a Rozzie Rats art show (at the Substation in Roslindale Village Square) featuring work by HILOBROW friends Rick Pinchera and Brad Peterson, among others. This “Welcome to Boston” poster by Eric MC Funk is genius.

4/22

We emptied closets and drawers on the 22nd, and moved out of our Boston home! Here’s a little collection of mine that I’d forgotten about until now.

4/24

I’m training for the Five Boro Bike Tour in NYC next month. Arduous ride over the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge. But these cider donuts on the other side are a draw.

4/25

I was painting/drawing at a furious pace last summer and fall, and then… as of this year… nothing. Trying to get back into the daily habit. Also trying to paint/draw on larger surfaces, which is hard. My hand doesn’t know how to make these shapes.

4/27

Hiking with Don and Judy.
