Beginning in March 2020, HILOBROW friend Mark Ramos Nishita (aka Money Mark) helped lift our spirits during the COVID lockdown by posting dozens of ingenious and funky “isolation jams” to his Instagram account. With Mark’s permission, over the next few weeks we will present a curated selection of this series. Click on each installment’s date to watch the video!
Isolation Jams number 62… D6 Clavinet can get a groove! And this riff proves it. Maybe that’s why Larry Harlow and Fania All-Stars used this instrument in their music. Puerto Rican music may be one of the few examples of how a people evolved musically outside of their homeland and in their second home: NYC! I first heard this song in an Ismael Miranda track then Orishas, an awesome Cuban Hip Hop group sample it to make a hit. Adam Yauch hipped me to this cool documentary called ‘Our Latin Thing’ from 1971. Go check it out! (It was Stevie Wonder’s b-day two days ago and was thinking of this keyboard).
