SCREENSHOTS is a monthly series of posts via which HILOBROW’s Josh Glenn reviews his most recent screenshots — before deleting them from the over-full Dropbox folder to which they’d been uploaded. Also see the PHOTO DUMP series.
Sneak preview of an event / zine coming next month. This is a collaboration between my writing accountability group (“the Space,” featuring HILOBROW friends Matthew Battles, Tom Nealon, James Parker) and HILOBROW friend Rick Pinchera’s art-making accountability group (“Rozzie Rats”). Very exciting…
I’ve continued to interview commercial/applied semioticians around the world for the MAKING SENSE Q&A series at SEMIOVOX. As of November, the series will go on hiatus — after 150 Q&As!
I’m the founder, though no longer the convenor of Semiofest’s series of informal online “sessions.” These events are intended not only to share best practices among, but to nurture collegiality and friendship within the global semio community. This was our most recent session.
Illustration for HILOBROW’s serialization of “Le Messager de la planète” (1924), by the French pulp author José [Joseph] Moselli. It will appear in December.
Detail from an art work that appeared in the SKIN DEEP series edited for HILOBROW by Adam McGovern. He profiled and interviewed the artists of the Black Cherry Lane: Presence exhibition, which honors the ancestors and descendants of Cherry Lane Cemetery, a Staten Island burial ground for free and formerly-enslaved people which is now itself buried under a parking lot, and which the artists are imagining a new life and legacy for.
Image submitted, for a forthcoming HILOBROW series on tattoos, by HILOBROW friend Alix Lambert.
Flower-petal diagram illustrating the social origins of American slang from the introduction of The Dictionary of American Slang (1960/1967) by Harold Wentworth and Stuart Berg Flexner. Did they really mean us to understand that there is significant slang overlap between, say, the Army and the Underworld and Narcotic Addicts? Or between Financial District Employees and Jazz Musicians and College Students? So weird.
Detail of a photo submitted by Colin Dickey, for a forthcoming installment in HILOBROW’s series MEDIA DIET.
Image, by Kaito Yanagawa, that we are thinking about including in a forthcoming anthology of Radium Age science fiction stories, translated from Japanese. (Edited and introduced by Eli K.P. William.) It accompanied a 1925 poem about robots.
