LOST OBJECTS update

By: HILOBROW
July 9, 2022

“This ridiculously entertaining book performs a neat conjuring trick. You will find your own lost objects flying back to you as you read about other people’s dearly departed things. The conceit is ingenious and the beautiful illustrations make each writer’s ‘rosebud’ flare into radiant life again.” — Jenny Offill

Here’s an update about Lost Objects: 50 Stories About the Things We Miss and Why They Matter (ed. Josh Glenn and Rob Walker, Hat & Beard Press), the forthcoming book adaptation of the LOST OBJECTS stories published here at HILOBROW — under the aegis of Josh and Rob’s Project:Object — in 2017–2019.

Despite shipping delays caused by Covid and the war in Ukraine, Lost Objects is now in the warehouse of our US distributor, and should be available in bookstores later this month! (However, it won’t be available via Amazon until a later date — which is very much on purpose.) Hat & Beard encourages you to purchase the book via a brick-and-mortar bookstore… or else order it directly.

If you should choose to purchase the book directly from Hat & Beard, for the next few weeks the checkout code LOSTOBJECTS will take 20% off the price of the book (or a book/poster combo). Sample poster shown below.

Sample LOST OBJECTS poster available only via Hat & Beard’s website.

LO contributors Molly Sauter, Mandy Keifetz, and Dean Haspiel were also on hand to sign copies of the book. It was a lot of fun!

REVIEWS & SHOUT-OUTS

Thanks to LO contributor Heather Kapplow for spreading the news in the first issue of her newsletter FROM THE DESK OF HEATHER KAPPLOW. “A short essay about one of the finest and most enlightening artworks I’ve ever made (and how it disappeared completely) is included in this illustrated anthology of treasured lost objects.”

The University of Texas alumni magazine, Alcalde, published an interview with Rob about Lost Objects — on July 1. Excerpt: “I think people in general are a bit defensive about their relationship to objects. And I feel like working through this subject over time has made me less defensive about objects. I keep the stuff I keep and I’m not sentimental about stuff that needs to go.”

Speaking of Rob, check out this “What Matters” interview with him at PRINT.

Thanks, Kottke, for the shout-out. And Cool Material, too.

More reviews & shout-outs to come, once the book is officially published.
