Stop the Stop-Motion

As previously noted, HiLobrow digs the work of Italian painter and stop-motion animator Blu. For example:

I noticed today that parts of a new ad for Levi’s WaterLess line of jeans directed by Josh Nussbaum look extremely similar to Blu’s work.

I’m confused — did Blu work on this Levi’s ad? Is John Nussbaum Blu? Or did Levi’s rip off Blu? Are Blu and Levi’s both ripping off/paying homage to someone else? Blu’s Wikipedia page doesn’t mention Levi’s. Neither does Blu’s website.
Readers with inside info, please let me know.
