A collection of photos taken during the past month by HILOBROW’s Josh Glenn. Also see the SCREENSHOTS series; and see HILOBROW’s Instagram feed.

The first half of August was hot in upstate New York, but Tito needs his hikes. Let this photo stand in for many others. PS: The second half of August has been glorious.

Peeking out from underneath HILOBROW friend Annalee Newitz’s latest sf novel, here’s my latest (third) anthology of Radium Age proto-sf stories. Published August 19th, this one is about the forerunners of today’s comic-book/cinematic superheroes…

GIVE IT UP postcards on display at Camp Kingston. After months of preparation, brilliantly project-managed by Susan, my latest story telling experiment with Rob Walker launched this month. It runs through September 10.

Our new Kingston friends Bridget Badore, who designed GIVE IT UP’s 11 object exhibits, and Tommy Sullivan, who created the project’s signage and marketing materials, scoping out uptown Kingston’s Salt Box. PS: Karlie Flood recruited almost all of the venues.

GIVE IT UP fly-poster, one of many that have popped up around Kingston. Designed by Tommy, project logo created by Karlie.

Bridget outside The DRAW Gallery at MKAD, deciding the precise placement of Maggie Inge’s evening bag. DRAW’s Chris O’Neal — another new friend — lending a hand. This was GIVE IT UP’s first install.

Utility Bicycle Works (uptown Kingston) owner Bryan Richardson installs Halimah Marcus’ bicycle and GIVE IT UP signage.

GIVE IT UP experiment subject Will Hermes’ “humility plaque,” installed at Salt Box. Will is a friend from back when he and I lived in Minneapolis. He’s now in New Paltz; we’ve reconnected!

GIVE IT UP experiment subject Julian Richards at Maison Après. Emma Tourtelot’s “marriage dish” displayed at right. Julian owns the building (in Kingston’s Rondout) that houses Maison Après. Julian is a new friend; Emma is an old friend from our dotcom days in the mid-’90s. She lives in Rhinecliff; we’ve reconnected!

A charismatic entrant in the Kingston Artist Soap Box Derby.

Susan volunteers as an interpretive guide at Mohonk Preserve — an amazing nature park spanning the towns of Gardiner, Marbletown, New Paltz, Rochester, and Rosendale. She’s been exploring every inch of it. Here’s the park’s Testimonial Gateway, a bonkers 1908 folly.

HILOBROW friends Emma Tourtelot, Lucy Sante, Annie Nocenti reading selections from Before Superman. Many thanks to the (very talented) readers, audience, and O+ art director Lindsey Wolkowicz for hosting the book’s launch event in the O+ Festival‘s lovely, brand-new venue in uptown Kingston.

Drew Broussard’s wooden scimitar on display at Red Owl (in Kingston). Drew, a new friend, is a writer, musician, Lit Hub podcast host, and bookstore manager at Kingston’s Rough Draft. He was one of the readers at the Before Superman event, after which Susan and I went to see Drew’s partner Dani Lenconi’s (aka the indie rocker Evelyn) solo show at Night Swim. A fun evening out!

Adam Snyder’s Protectograph on display — along with his recent coming-of-age novel, Kingston 76, and his record This Town Will Get Its Due — at Rewind Kingston, in midtown. Which is owned and operated by Karlie Flood’s family.
