SCREENSHOTS is a monthly series of posts via which HILOBROW’s Josh Glenn reviews his most recent screenshots — before deleting them from the over-full Dropbox folder to which they’d been uploaded. Also see the PHOTO DUMP series.

JULY 2025

Illustration by Rani Som for her installment — on The Bodysnatchers’ “Easy Life” (1981) — in HILOBROW’s forthcoming series SKANK YOUR ENTHUSISAM (about favorite ska tunes).

I continue to interview commercial/applied semioticians around the world for the MAKING SENSE Q&A series at SEMIOVOX…

*

Illustration for an installment in the forthcoming HILOBROW series BROKEN KNOWLEDGE — an epistolary exchange, about science fiction, by yours truly and Mark Kingwell. A follow-up, of sorts, to our 2023 49th PARALLEL exchange, about adventure lit.

*

Detail from a Mountain Dew Baja Blast commercial. One of hundreds of commercials, pack designs, and social media posts analyzed in the course of a large-scale semio analysis that Semiovox conducted in June and July on behalf of a multinational beverage company. (NB: Mountain Dew is not the client.)

*

Photo shared with me by my Argentinian semio colleague Ximena Tobi, for an upcoming installment in the SEMIOVOX series PHOTO OP.

*

Adelina Vaca has joined me as co-convenor of the monthly online series SEMIOFEST SESSIONS. She and I issued this invitation to our semio colleagues worldwide on the 24th.

*

I used to make fake posters, like this one, sometimes for PROJECT:OBJECT. Not for publication. Just to make Rob Walker laugh. It’s been a while!

MIDJOURNEY

Two Midjourney-generated images from July:

AI-assisted image by HILOBROW

Failed effort to create an illustration for Mandy Keifetz’s 4th of July HILOBROW post ICE ISN’T COOL.

During July’s Semiofest Session on “Semiotics & Gender Equality,” we were challenged to prompt AI to produce a product ad for women. This was what I shared… A lot to think about here.

After a few weeks away from this project, I’ve returned to working on a game / semiotics teaching tool with HILOBROW friend Ramona Lyons.
