Gertrude Atherton (1857-1948), American author and feminist, published about 50 books. Her first work of genre interest was "The Caves of Death" (1886); her first novel was an occult romance involving metempsychosis, What Dreams May Come (1888) as by Frank Lin. The sexual implications of her 1923 novel Black Oxen caused a scandal.
